imgflip gif comparison
Imgflip GIF maker alternatives without a watermark
Imgflip's free GIFs carry an imgflip.com watermark and stop at 360×360. Free alternatives with no watermark and no account, compared on size, photo effects and captions — which is where Imgflip is still strongest.

Imgflip's free GIF maker stamps “imgflip.com” in the bottom-left corner and caps GIFs at 360 × 360 pixels. For a GIF with neither, ezgif, gifmake and Gifsy export free GIFs without a watermark or an account, and 3dgifmaker offers 70+ effects. Kapwing isn't a way out: its free plan watermarks too.
We make Gifsy, so read its entry with that in mind. It's judged on the same points as the others, and the table shows where it loses: a fixed 480 px square, no captions, no video input.
Which alternative for which job
| You want | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A caption or a meme template | Imgflip (Pro if the mark matters) | Captions and templates are what Imgflip does best. Nothing below replaces them. |
| A bigger GIF with no watermark | ezgif | Up to 1920 × 1920, free, no signup. Your files go to its server and are deleted after an hour. |
| One still photo that moves | Gifsy or 3dgifmaker | Gifsy has 6 effects and runs in your browser; 3dgifmaker has 70+ and outputs up to 1300 px. |
| A slideshow from photos, nothing uploaded | Gifsy or gifmake | Both run in the browser. Gifsy can also play the photos forward and back as a boomerang. |
What Imgflip's free plan gives you
| Free | Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Watermark | “imgflip.com”, bottom left | Removed |
| Maximum size | 360 × 360 (“not HD”) | Unlimited |
| Frames | Up to 160 | Unlimited |
| Account | Optional; logging in stores your GIFs | — |
| Price | Free | $14.95/month, or $11.95/month billed yearly |
The watermark is the reason most people go looking. The size cap is the part they don't expect. It's printed on Imgflip's own GIF maker page (“Max Dimensions 360x360 (not HD)”), yet none of the alternatives articles ranking for this search mention it. At 360 px a GIF is fine as a chat reply. Drop it into a blog post or a README on a high-density screen and it goes soft.
One more thing to know before you switch. Imgflip's “Images to GIF” mode builds a slideshow: you add frames and it plays them in order. We didn't find motion effects for a single still photo on its GIF maker page, so if that's what you're after, the alternatives below do more than Imgflip does.
How we compared
We read each tool's own pages on 23 September 2026 and lined up the same seven things: watermark on the free plan, account to download, where the GIF is made, effects for one still photo, slideshows from several photos, boomerang from stills, and maximum size.
This compares what each tool states. We didn't make a test GIF in every tool, so where a page is silent the table says so instead of guessing. Canva, Adobe Express and GIPHY are left out for now: their pages couldn't be read that day, and we won't list free-plan terms we haven't checked.

The alternatives
1. Gifsy: photo effects and slideshows, made in your browser
Gifsy's GIF maker does two things. It animates one photo with zoom, bounce, shake, pulse, spin or glitch, or it turns two or more photos into a slideshow. You get a 480 × 480 GIF at 8–30 fps, with no watermark and no account, and the photo never leaves your tab: the frames are drawn and the GIF is encoded by JavaScript on your device.
The closest match to Imgflip's Images to GIF is the photo slideshow GIF maker: 0.2 to 1.5 seconds per photo, played in the order you add them. Turn on Boomerang with three or more shots and it plays forward, then back, which is how the boomerang GIF maker turns a phone burst into a loop with no video. For a single photo, the glitch and spin effects are the ones Imgflip has no answer to.
Where it loses: no text or captions, no meme templates, no video input, and the output is always a 480 px square. There's also no drag-to-reorder, so add slideshow photos in the order you want them.
2. ezgif: the biggest free GIFs
ezgif's GIF maker calls itself “100% free: no watermarks, no signup”, and it's the most capable free option here for slideshows: up to 2,000 files or 200 MB, drag-to-reorder, crossfades, and output up to 1920 × 1920. For one still photo there's a separate static-to-GIF page with five effects (Waving Flag, Zoom, Horizontal Scroll, Vertical Scroll and Rotation) that also exports APNG, WebP and AVIF.
The trade-off is privacy. Files go to ezgif's server and are “automatically deleted 1 hour after upload”. A back-and-forth loop needs two passes, because its reverse tool works on a GIF you've already made. We cover it in more detail in ezgif alternatives for photo GIFs.
3. 3dgifmaker: the most effects for one photo
If you want range, 3dgifmaker wins outright: “70+ animations”, including 360 Spin, Glitch, Heartbeat, Vertical Wave, Zoom, Explode and Swirl, against Gifsy's six. No sign-up, and in its words “the GIF is made in your browser and saved to your device.” You set the size (1 to 1300 px), 1 to 50 fps and up to 150 frames. Its page doesn't mention a watermark. Slideshows from several photos aren't its focus, and reversing a GIF is a separate tool.
4. gifmake: slideshows that stay on your device
gifmake promises “no watermark ever, no signup required” and says “your images never leave your device”. It's a frames-in-a-row tool: up to 20 files a batch, 8 MB per file, 250 frames, with a Reverse Frames option. It doesn't list effects for a single photo, so use it for the slideshow half of what Imgflip does.
Not a way out: Kapwing
Kapwing turns up in the same searches, but its pricing page lists the free plan as “Unlimited exports with a watermark” at 720p. Removing it means Pro at $16 a month billed yearly, or $24 month to month. That swaps one watermark for another, and one subscription for a pricier one.
Where Imgflip is still better
Plenty of people should stay. If the GIF is a joke, Imgflip is built for it and the tools above aren't:
- Captions and meme templates. None of the no-watermark options here match them, and Gifsy has no text tool at all.
- Video input. Imgflip makes GIFs from video clips. Gifsy only takes photos.
- Size and length on Pro. Pro removes both the 360 px cap and the 160-frame limit.
- Output shape. Gifsy only makes a 480 px square, so a wide or tall GIF needs another tool.
So the choice is mostly about what you're making. A captioned meme: keep Imgflip, and pay for Pro if the mark bothers you. A still photo that should move, or a clean slideshow without a watermark: one of the free tools above does it without an account. Our comparison of free GIF makers lines up the same tools on the rest of the details.
FAQ
How do I remove the Imgflip watermark?
Imgflip Pro removes it: $14.95 a month, or $11.95 a month billed yearly. The other route is to make the GIF in a tool that doesn't add one in the first place, such as ezgif, gifmake or Gifsy.
What size are Imgflip GIFs on the free plan?
Imgflip's GIF maker page lists "Max Dimensions 360x360 (not HD)" for free GIFs, with up to 160 frames. Pro lifts both limits. Checked 23 September 2026.
Do I need an Imgflip account to make a GIF?
No. Logging in is optional; Imgflip says that if you're logged in, your GIF creations are stored on your account.
Is there a free GIF maker with no watermark and no signup?
Yes. ezgif says it is free with no watermarks and no signup, gifmake says the same, and Gifsy adds no watermark and needs no account. 3dgifmaker needs no sign-up and doesn't mention a watermark.
Can I make a GIF from photos without uploading them?
gifmake, 3dgifmaker and Gifsy all say the GIF is made in your browser. ezgif uploads your files to its server and deletes them an hour later. Imgflip's GIF maker page doesn't say either way.
Can I add text to a GIF without Imgflip?
Of the tools on this page, Imgflip is the one built for captions and meme templates. Gifsy has no text tool, so if you need words on the GIF, put them on the photo first or keep Imgflip for that job.
