Ezgif alternatives for photo GIFs: animate a still without uploading it

Ezgif is free, watermark-free and hard to beat for editing GIFs — but it uploads your files and has five effects for a still photo. Where the alternatives do better with photos, and where ezgif still wins.

Stay on ezgif if you are editing an existing GIF, need output up to 1920 px, WebP or AVIF, or a slideshow with crossfades. Switch if you want to animate a single photo without uploading it, or make a boomerang straight from a burst of stills. Gifsy, 3dgifmaker and gifmake all run in your browser.

We make Gifsy. It is one of five entries below and gets the same columns as the rest, including the ones where it loses: its GIFs are a fixed 480 px square, it has 6 effects to 3dgifmaker's 70-plus, and it has no text tool.

What ezgif does with one photo

Most “ezgif alternative” articles are about turning a video into a GIF. This one is about a photo: you have one picture of a dog, or five shots from a burst, and you want something that moves.

ezgif can do it. Its static-to-GIF page takes a single image and gives you five animations: Waving Flag, Zoom, Horizontal Scroll, Vertical Scroll and Rotation. Its GIF maker takes several images and stitches them into a slideshow. Three things are worth knowing before you pick it for photos, though.

Your photo goes to ezgif's server

ezgif is a server-side tool. The file you choose is uploaded, processed, and, per its own pages, automatically deleted an hour later. For a meme that's fine. For a photo of your kid, an unreleased product or a client's work, you may prefer a tool where the photo never leaves the tab. That's not rare any more: 3dgifmaker, gifmake and Gifsy all state that the GIF is built in your browser. So privacy is a reason to leave ezgif, but not a reason to pick one of the three over the others.

Five effects, on a separate page

The single-photo animations live on static-to-GIF, apart from the maker. Five is a short list. It's enough for a zoom or a slow scroll across a wide photo, and not enough if you want a bounce, a glitch or a heartbeat pulse.

Boomerang takes two trips

ezgif does have a forward-then-back (“ping-pong”) option, but it lives on the reverse tool, which only accepts an animated file. From a burst of stills, that means making a GIF in the maker, downloading it, uploading it again to the reverse tool, and downloading the result.

An ezgif alternative that works offline

A lot of people searching for an “ezgif local alternative” want one thing: a GIF maker that doesn't send their photos to someone else's server. ezgif uploads each file and deletes it after an hour, which is fine for a meme and less fine for a photo of your kids or an unreleased product.

Gifsy's GIF maker does the whole job in the browser tab. The first GIF downloads a small encoder; after that you can switch Wi-Fi off and it keeps working, because nothing it does needs a server. You can check it in your browser's Network tab: no request carries the photo. The trade-off is scope. It makes GIFs from photos (six effects, slideshows, boomerangs) at 480 × 480; it doesn't edit, crop, resize or optimise GIFs you already have. For those, the local option is a desktop tool like ImageMagick or Gifsicle, not a website.

The alternatives

1. Gifsy: effects and slideshows in one tool, boomerang from stills

What you get: one page with two modes. “Animate one” applies one of six effects to a photo (Zoom, Bounce, Shake, Pulse, Spin, Glitch) over 30 frames at 8 to 30 fps. “Combine several” makes a slideshow at 0.2 to 1.5 seconds per photo. Both have a Boomerang switch, so a burst of three or more stills becomes a back-and-forth loop without a video; the boomerang GIF maker starts set up that way.

Where the photo goes: nowhere. The GIF is encoded in the tab; after the first one, it even works with Wi-Fi off. Cost: free, no account, no watermark. The only paid thing on Gifsy is credits for its separate 3D model tool, not the GIF maker.

Honest limits: every GIF is a 480 × 480 centre crop, with no size control. There's no text, no video input, no transparency and no WebP. Photos in a slideshow play in the order you add them (no drag to reorder) with hard cuts. Best for: a single photo you want to spin or glitch privately, or a burst you want as a boomerang. Start at the GIF maker, or the photo slideshow maker for several photos.

2. 3dgifmaker: the most effects for a single image

3dgifmaker lists “70+ animations”, among them 360 Spin, Glitch, Heartbeat, Vertical Wave, Zoom, Explode and Swirl, many with a page of their own. Its site says “The GIF is made in your browser and saved to your device”, with no sign-up. Output runs from 1 to 1300 px, 1 to 50 fps and up to 150 frames. Honest limits: its pages are about animating one image (we didn't check for a slideshow mode), and reversing is a separate tool rather than a ping-pong switch. Best for: the widest choice of effects on one photo. On effect count alone, it beats Gifsy by a long way.

3. gifmake: a no-upload slideshow maker

gifmake says “your images never leave your device” and “no watermark ever, no signup required”. It takes up to 20 files per batch, 8 MB per file, 250 frames, and has a Reverse Frames option. It lists no single-photo effects. Best for: the ezgif maker's job (photos into a slideshow) without the upload.

4. Imgflip: captions, with a watermark

Imgflip's GIF maker is a meme tool first, and its text overlays are the reason to use it. The free tier puts an “imgflip.com” mark in the bottom-left corner and caps GIFs at “Max Dimensions 360x360 (not HD)”. Pro removes both for $14.95 a month. Its images-to-GIF mode is a slideshow; we found no single-photo effects. More in our Imgflip alternatives comparison.

5. Kapwing: a cloud editor with a watermark on free

Kapwing's image-to-GIF tool sits inside a full video editor. Its pricing page describes the free plan as “Unlimited exports with a watermark” at 720p, and the tool page says an account is required to export. Pro is $16 a month billed yearly. Best for: people who already edit video in Kapwing. As a free ezgif replacement it's a step backwards.

Where ezgif is still better

Plenty. If your job is anything other than “make this photo move”, ezgif is hard to leave:

  • Size. 1920 × 1920 output, four times the width of Gifsy's square.
  • Formats. Static-to-GIF also writes APNG, WebP and AVIF, which are often far smaller than a GIF.
  • Slideshows. Up to 2,000 files or 200 MB, drag to reorder, and crossfades between frames.
  • Everything after the GIF exists. Resizing, cropping, optimising, splitting, speed changes: ezgif is a whole toolbox, and none of the alternatives here try to be one.

So a sensible split is to make the animation where your photo stays on your machine, then take the finished GIF to ezgif if it needs resizing or a smaller format. The whole field, including tools that aren't ezgif alternatives, is in best free GIF makers for photos.

FAQ

Does ezgif upload my photos?

Yes. ezgif processes files on its own servers, and its pages say uploaded files are automatically deleted 1 hour after upload. It needs no account and adds no watermark.

Does ezgif add a watermark?

No. Its maker page says "100% free: no watermarks, no signup". If a watermark is why you are leaving, you are thinking of Imgflip or Kapwing, whose free tiers do add one.

Is there an ezgif alternative that runs in the browser?

Three that say so on their own pages: Gifsy, 3dgifmaker and gifmake. Each builds the GIF on your device instead of uploading the photo. After the first GIF (which loads the encoder), Gifsy's GIF maker keeps working with Wi-Fi off.

Is there an offline or local alternative to ezgif?

For making GIFs from photos, yes. Gifsy's GIF maker runs in the browser tab: the photo is never uploaded, and after the first GIF (which downloads the encoder) you can turn Wi-Fi off and keep making GIFs. gifmake and 3dgifmaker also build GIFs on your device, but their pages don't say whether they work offline. For editing an existing GIF, ezgif has no local equivalent we could find; a desktop tool such as ImageMagick or Gifsicle is the usual route.

Can ezgif make a boomerang from a still photo?

In two steps. Make an animated GIF first (with the maker or the static-to-GIF effects), then run that GIF through ezgif's reverse tool, which has the forward-then-back option. The reverse tool needs an animated file as input, not a still.

Which alternative has the most effects for a single photo?

3dgifmaker, with 70+ animations including 360 Spin, Glitch, Heartbeat and Explode. ezgif's static-to-GIF page has 5 and Gifsy has 6.

What's the largest GIF the alternatives make?

ezgif is the biggest at 1920 × 1920. 3dgifmaker goes up to 1300 px, Kapwing's free plan to 720p, Gifsy to a 480 × 480 square, and Imgflip's free tier to 360 × 360.

How we compared & update log

Every fact above comes from the tool's own pages, read on 23 September 2026: ezgif.com/maker, /static-to-gif and /reverse; 3dgifmaker.com and its 360 Spin page; gifmake.com; imgflip.com/gif-maker; kapwing.com/tools/convert/image-to-gif and kapwing.com/pricing. Gifsy's rows come from its own source code. We haven't yet run every tool on the same photo, so nothing here claims a hands-on test, and cells a page didn't answer say so.
