Mixamo is free, royalty-free and still the easiest way to rig a humanoid you already have. People look elsewhere when they don't have a model yet, need a GLB, have a character with four legs, or hit Mixamo's upload errors. The alternatives split in two: tools that rig your model (AccuRIG, Meshy, Tripo) and tools that make the model and rig it for you (Meshy, Tripo, Gifsy).
We make Gifsy. It is one of five entries below, judged on the same criteria. Its biggest gap for a Mixamo user comes first: Gifsy can't rig a model you upload. It only rigs the characters it makes from your photo or prompt.
Which tool for which job
| You have | You want | Pick |
|---|---|---|
| A humanoid model | It rigged and animated, free | Mixamo. Nothing here beats free and royalty-free for a biped. |
| A humanoid model | Finger bones and engine export presets | AccuRIG 2, if a desktop app is fine. |
| A four-legged model | It rigged | Meshy or Tripo. Mixamo and Gifsy can't. |
| No model, just a photo or an idea | A rigged character that already walks | Gifsy, Meshy or Tripo. Gifsy if you want Mixamo bone names and a GLB by default. |
How we compared
- Does it make the model, or do you bring one?
- Can it rig a model you bring, and in which formats?
- Which bodies it rigs: humanoids only, or four legs and more.
- Animation: how many clips, and whether they are free.
- Export formats for a rigged character, GLB in particular.
- Price and licence on the free tier and the first paid tier.
- Where it runs: browser, desktop app or API.
Facts were read from each tool's own pricing, documentation or help pages on 19 October 2026. Adobe's help pages refused our fetch that day, so the Mixamo row carries only what we could confirm elsewhere. Tripo's site refuses fetches too; its prices come from a Wayback Machine copy of its pricing page taken the same day.
Why people look past Mixamo
- You need a model first. Mixamo rigs and animates; it doesn't make characters, beyond its own stock ones.
- No GLB. Exports are FBX and DAE. For a website or three.js, that means a round trip through Blender.
- Humanoids only. Dogs, horses, spiders and dragons can't be rigged.
- Upload errors. Adobe's forums have threads about “Too many requests” and failed uploads in 2025, and heavy FBX files (hair, many parts) breaking the rig step.
- Account limits. It needs an Adobe ID, and Enterprise or Federated IDs can't use it.
- Engine retargeting. Mixamo's T-pose skeleton has no root bone, so Unreal users retarget and fix hands by hand.
Head-to-head table
Scroll sideways on a narrow screen: seven columns, five tools.
| Tool | Makes the model? | Rigs your model? | Bodies | Animations | Rigged export | Price | Runs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mixamo | No (stock characters only) | Yes: FBX, OBJ or zipped OBJ | Two-legged humanoids | Large library, all free | FBX, FBX for Unity, DAE | Free with an Adobe ID | Web |
| AccuRIG 2 | No | Yes: OBJ, FBX | Humanoids, with a finger rig | ActorCore library, mostly paid per clip | FBX (engine presets), USD | Free rigger; free ActorCore account to export | Desktop app |
| Meshy | Yes: text or image | Yes | Humanoids and quadrupeds; no props or vehicles | 20 on Free, 500+ on paid plans | Rigged: FBX, GLB | Free 100 credits (CC BY 4.0); Pro $20/mo | Web, API |
| Tripo | Yes: text or image | Yes | Biped, quadruped and more (API) | Preset library (API: 90+ biped) | Rigged: GLB, FBX; Mixamo names optional (API) | Free 200 credits/mo (public, non-commercial); Pro $20/mo | Web, API |
| Gifsy | Yes: photo or text | No | Humanoids; others get a free-form skeleton | Idle, walk, run in the file; aim & fire preview | GLB (rigged), STL (for printing) | 2 free models, then $9/mo for 10 | Web |
The alternatives
1. AccuRIG 2: free desktop auto-rigger
What you get: Reallusion's auto-rigger fits a body rig plus a separate finger rig to an OBJ or FBX you bring, then exports FBX with presets for Unity, Unreal, Blender, Maya and others, or USD. Animation: the ActorCore library is built in, but most clips are sold per clip or in packs. Price: the rigger is free; exporting needs a free ActorCore account. Honest limitation: a desktop app, not a browser tool, and the free motion set is small. Best for: a humanoid you already have that needs hands that move.
2. Meshy: make or upload, rig, animate
What you get: text or image to 3D, plus an auto-rigger for humanoids and quadrupeds (props, buildings and vehicles can't be rigged) that also takes your own model. Rigged models export as FBX or GLB. Animation: 20 clips on the free plan, 500+ on paid plans. Price: Free gives 100 credits under CC BY 4.0, so you credit Meshy when you use the model; Pro is $20 a month for 1,000 credits and a private licence. Honest limitation: credits run fast if you make many models. Best for: rigging animals, and the biggest animation set of the AI tools.
3. Tripo: make or import, rig any body
What you get: text or image to 3D and an auto-rigger. Its API lists biped, quadruped, hexapod, avian, serpentine and other rig types, and can name the bones the Mixamo way. Rigged models export as GLB or FBX. Animation: a preset library (90+ biped presets in the API). Price: 200 free credits a month, but free models are public, non-commercial, and only the older v2.5 model can be downloaded; Pro is $20 a month for 3,000 credits with commercial use. Honest limitation: the widest rig support also means more settings to learn. Best for: unusual bodies: birds, snakes, insects.
4. Gifsy: a rigged character from a photo or a sentence
What you get: a textured GLB made from your photo or prompt. Characters get a 22-bone humanoid skeleton with Mixamo's bone names, and Idle, Walk and Run are saved in the download as clips. Characters that don't fit a human body get a free-form skeleton you can pose, without the clips. Every model also comes as an STL for printing. Price: 2 free models per account, then monthly plans from $9 for 10 models; a failed model gives its credit back. Models run on our GPU server, not in your browser. Honest limitation: it can't rig a model you bring, has 3 clips instead of a library, no finger bones and no FBX export (Blender converts the GLB). Best for: when you don't have a model yet. Try the character generator.

Gifsy vs Mixamo, side by side
| Mixamo | Gifsy | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Your FBX or OBJ model | A photo or a text prompt |
| Makes the model | No | Yes |
| Skeleton | Mixamo humanoid | 22-bone humanoid with Mixamo names, no fingers |
| Animations | Large free library | Idle, walk and run in the file |
| Export | FBX, DAE | GLB, STL |
| Price | Free | 2 free models, then from $9/mo |
| Maturity | Over a decade, Adobe | Months, two people |
Choose Mixamo if you have a humanoid model and want many free animations.
Choose Gifsy if you don't have a model yet, want a GLB for the web or three.js, or want a character from a photo that already walks when it lands in your engine.
Using Mixamo clips on a Gifsy character
They work together. Because a Gifsy humanoid's bones use Mixamo's names, Mixamo's library can drive it:
- Make a character on Gifsy and download the GLB.
- On Mixamo, pick a clip on any stock character and download it as FBX, without skin.
- In Blender, import both, then retarget the clip onto the Gifsy armature with a retargeting add-on. The matching names mean little or no bone mapping.
- Export from Blender as GLB for the web, or FBX for Unity and Unreal.
The rig and the clips are explained on the animations page; the character generator covers photos and prompts.
FAQ
Is Mixamo still free?
Yes. Mixamo is free with an Adobe ID, no Creative Cloud plan needed, and Adobe allows its characters and animations in personal, commercial and non-profit work, including games and films. Enterprise and Federated IDs can't use it. Checked 19 October 2026.
What can I use instead of Mixamo?
If you already have a model: AccuRIG 2 (free desktop auto-rigger) or the auto-riggers inside Meshy and Tripo. If you don't have a model yet: Meshy, Tripo or Gifsy make the model and rig it in one go.
Can I use Mixamo animations on a Gifsy character?
Yes, when the humanoid rig fits. The bones carry Mixamo's names (mixamorig:Hips, mixamorig:Spine and so on), so a clip downloaded from Mixamo retargets onto the Gifsy skeleton in Blender with little or no bone mapping.
Does Mixamo export GLB?
No. Mixamo exports FBX (including an FBX preset for Unity) and DAE. For the web or three.js you convert the FBX to GLB yourself, usually in Blender.
Can Mixamo rig a dog, a horse or a monster with four legs?
No. Mixamo's rigging and animations are for two-legged humanoids. Meshy rigs quadrupeds, and Tripo's API lists several body types beyond bipeds. Gifsy gives non-humanoid characters a free-form skeleton you can pose, without the walk and run clips.
Can Gifsy rig a model I already made?
Not yet. Gifsy rigs the characters it makes from your photo or prompt. To rig your own mesh, use Mixamo, AccuRIG, Meshy or Tripo.
Mixamo vs AccuRIG: which is better?
Mixamo runs in the browser and its whole library is free. AccuRIG 2 is a desktop app with a finger rig and exports for more engines, but most clips in its ActorCore library are paid. For a quick free walk or run, Mixamo; for hands and engine presets, AccuRIG.
