Boomerang GIF maker — from photos, no video

Gifsy's boomerang GIF maker turns photos into a back-and-forth loop without a video: add a burst of three or more shots and it plays them forward, then in reverse. One photo works too, with an effect. Download a 480 × 480 GIF: free, no sign-up, no watermark, nothing uploaded.

What a boomerang GIF is

A boomerang plays the frames forward and then backward inside one loop, so the last frame flows back into the first and the loop never jumps. Most boomerang tools need a video or an existing GIF. Here, a burst of photos from your phone is enough: each shot becomes a frame, played in order and then reversed.

Made with this tool from 8 frames of a short clip: Combine several, 0.2 s each, Boomerang on. Download the GIF (1.8 MB)

    3 or more photos

    A phone burst is ideal.

  • Timing

    0.2–1.5 s per photo

    0.2 s feels like a burst.

  • One photo?

    Use an effect

Spin and Glitch show the rewind best.

How to make a boomerang GIF

  1. 1

    Add 3 or more photos

A burst from your phone works best: same spot, one second of action.

  2. 2

    Keep Boomerang on

0.2–0.3 s per photo gives a snappy loop. Turn it off for a plain slideshow.

  3. 3

Photos that make a good boomerang

  • Works best
  • Burst mode shots: a jump, a splash, a hair flip, a toast
  • 3–10 frames taken from the same spot
  • 0.2–0.3 s per photo for a snappy loop
  • Photos with the same framing and exposure
  • Works worst
  • Unrelated photos — that's a slideshow; turn Boomerang off
  • Only two photos — a boomerang needs three or more
  • Mixed portrait and landscape shots, which crop differently
  • Long gaps between shots, which make the motion jerky

What is a boomerang GIF?

A short loop that plays forward and then backward, like Instagram's Boomerang. Because it reverses, the end meets the start and the loop never jumps.

Can I make a boomerang without a video?

Yes. Switch to 'Combine several', add three or more photos from a burst, and keep Boomerang on. Each photo becomes a frame, played forward and then back.

How many photos do I need?

At least three — with two there's nothing to reverse through. Five to ten burst shots at 0.2 s each look smooth.

Can I make a boomerang from a Live Photo?

Not as a photo. If you have the Live Photo's video as a file (MOV or MP4), Gifsy's video to GIF maker turns it into a boomerang; Live Photo videos are usually HEVC, so Safari is the safest browser for it. A burst of three or more stills gives the same back-and-forth here.

Can I make a boomerang from a single photo?

Yes, with an effect: switch to 'Animate one' and turn Boomerang on. Spin and Glitch show the rewind clearly; Zoom, Pulse and Bounce already move out and back, so they look much the same either way.

Is it free, and is there a watermark?

Free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many GIFs you make. The only paid thing on Gifsy is credits for the separate 3D model tool.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The frames are drawn and the GIF is encoded by JavaScript in your browser tab; this tool has no upload endpoint. You can check in your browser's Network tab, or turn Wi-Fi off after your first GIF (which loads the encoder) and make another.

Make it move in real 3D

A GIF effect moves the whole picture. A 3D photo separates the subject from the background and lets a visitor tilt it on your page — real parallax from one photo, with an embed code for any website.
